Do you care to elaborate, as the question can go both ways. Are you looking to render a sprite on the screen or on a 3d object.

On the screen , i added a new gameobject but it was rendered as 3D

One mesh , the main camera and a Sprite object.

Sprites need to be handled via script with the OnGui (legacy) or with the UI component and canvas.
If you want to add a sprite to the screen as an image you will have to add a image with the UI. GameObject-> UI-> Image/RawImage. What are you planning on doing with the sprite, because that will give you a better indication on which path to follow.
