Counter should work well I guess,aask mike about that he knows the multiplayer stuff

multiplayer will depend on server keeping track of players in database... it only has to be done on the server, and should only be done on the server because clients can always edit their own text files, and they may not always be online so other players scores might've changed...
this can only be done after you decide whether or not you want the scores to persist between games or not...
when a player disconnects and logs back on, they may not be assigned the same player number, so you will have to come up with logic to individual players to their score that is not dependent on the assigned player number...
oh yeah, i think it'll be a text file... not a binary file...
hope that gives you some insight as to what you're planning on doing...
