Nicursor, I recommend you use some kind of version control system, like Git. It'll help you avoid problems like this and save you a tonne of headaches and worries. The user manual is quick and easy to understand
A quick intro for git, for those who may not have heard/ used it: Git allows you to manage your source code by taking snapshots of the code when you make changes, and allowing you to keep multiple versions of your code, and switch between them in a second, by the use of things called branches. further, you can easily revert all the changes you make at any time, etc etc. So experiments can be done with the ease of mind in another branch, and if the experiment fails and everything screws up, just drop the branch and you're back to the latest stable place.
