it can be found here "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Recovery"
On this menu you'll see an option - Create a recovery drive
WARNING the info for this tells you "this will delete all contents of the drive"
I made the mistake and understood this to mean - deleting all files and directory's of the selected partition....
What it actually means is - "delete all contents of the selected drive including all partitions and their contents"
Sooooooooo
Having a sweet 2T external USB drive, partitioned into 3 drives, i planned to use one partition as backup storage, and one as daily use general type of drive, the 3rd piece intended for ubuntu.
I selected the fat32 formatted partition ( 25G i think it was ) intended to install ubuntu on it at some point.
My thoughts were, having this windows recovery option and re-installation option for windows on my backup drive would be a good idea.
So i started the process only to see an error popup 10 minutes into the process, and it aborted, without telling what the error was...
I look at the drive contents only to notice, 1 single fat32 partition 32G in size, the rest of my 2T drive listed as un-partitioned
CAN YOU SAY F*** 10 DIFFERENT WAYS IN A FEW SECONDS... I DID....
As best as i can remember i may have lost 80G worth of backup files and a ton of other daily use type of stuff, like downloads and screen caps text files etc...
I'm currently running a partition utility that has a partition recovery option, it's currently scanning this 2T drive looking for deleted partitions and contents.
It's been running for 15 hours @72% complete so far, ( using the not so - 'quick' ) scan option, and no guarantee that any of my data will be found or restored .....
I blame microsoft 75% for this, because they didn't include that little bit of extra info mentioning " the drive will be re-partitioned deleting any current partitions and data on them"
I blame myself 25% for this, for not researching the recovery drive process before using it..
Fortunately most of the lost data (if any) will be more of a pain in the ass to replace then anything else. Not to mention all the wasted time copy the data for backup purpose's.... some of the data used a move process, with no other copies available, and will be lost if not recovered.
i do have a add-on search utility that keeps an index of all files on my computer, so i can see and list every file that was on the drive before the mishap... that will be handy to replace any important files if needed and if possible to replace.
And the most stoopid part of this process, win10 told me i only needed 8G of space for this recovery / restore / re-installation drive, a whole 2T drive screwed up over this, and i could have used a USB stick ... F*** F*** F*** F***
