This is a topic i wanted to discuss for so long,,, we as game designers while making the game... like, when we want to make characters, cars, in-game brands, or locations looks like a big obstacle, there are always two ways The easy way- i make a character which looks like Kratos of God of War change its appearance a bit and change its name and hell yeah m done, totally nailed it.. The hard way- i make my own character, develop its personality, make it interesting, and amazing enough to stand in front of other video game characters, make him a legend.. Critical response :- People will tend to like original characters more than those who just look like a cheap copy of the real one, they would be able to relate a bit with the real one, it will have a much positive effect on the players, there are some cases in which you have the license and you can make it like the real one and use its real name, for example, Kratos in mortal kombat, or spiderman in marvel vs capcom, or the ford mustang gt in need for speed carbon, real player names in ea cricket 07 tell me what would you play, 1.Sonic or Soonic Statisfaction-: you have a lot of satisfaction making something original, for sure it really makes me sad that the most diverse industry the video game industry is looking for loop holes so that they might not get sued, when someone makes a cheap looking duplicate of your game stuff, you took 1 month to think of the character's looks, name, style and its copied in a day and he doesn't even gives you are a credit this is a serious topic we must think about it.....

I think the problem is that people create games now a days in their off time and they are in a rush to get everything done. In a result you get something like you mentioned above. Unfortunetly every one does these things, hell even AAA games do it, not to such extent but they do it.
It would be nice if there was some law that could solve these problems. Even I am guilty and I know it.
There are so many games out there on the market that almost any game that gets released is in a lot of ways like an other game(in the way mentioned above). Even if you didn't know of that game the chances of there being a game like yours is above 70%. It is unplanned for and you still feel proud on your side, but the users just see it as a clone, wether they enjoy the game or not.
Very interesting topic.

like once someone said that you could never be the best copycat ever but you can be the best yourself, i was looking at this upcoming game once just to avoid lawsuits you change the name but everyone knows that its fake, there would be a never ending line of criticism upon you and then you might even get sued by the company, do you think that they would miss that opportunity the image was posted on facebook and there were about 60 comments enough to change the mind of the developer and to make something like thisThere are still some references but this looks better and original,, players would like some references but copying it completely is something else

It does look completely different, the concept is still there though(this is something that you can't really take away).

About copying games or game ideas. I say it's not rare. A lot of developers or companys are copying other games like this. This topic deserves attention. Now take a look... Mincraft Pocket Edidion by MOJANG: Then appeared Survival Craft by Candy Avrus Games: Later I heard about Block Story: So they just change the name and do the same thing. But adding extra stuff trying to make it look more interesting than Minecraft (I don't know do Mojang copied the game from somewhere and name it Minecraft ).

Notch (Minecraft owner) took the idea from a game, named Infiniminer and made it only better with that crushing manufacter brand named Minecraft... It's a really successful game... almost everyone heard about it... anyway!
We need a lawyer here... Mike was closer to this, but... never more...
The copyright really bothers me... If I like a game, I want to remake it in Rad and I don't think pretty much about the name or the brand... For example I want Geometry dash in 3D Rad, but obviously if the game becomes popular this will be a copyright strike...I probably have to spend hours, days, weeks of thinking of a logo or a brand that fits the game perfectly...
And also the musics... the graphics... I make them by myself, but they are pretty much copied again because they are damn equal and simplistic... I don't know... If someone has a suggestion on this question I'm gonna make a new thread about it...
Gamedev... you opened such an important question that we must pay attention to it... thanks for reminding...

Notch just took the idea from a game.... he didn't stole it he was making this game for years, updating it regularly.. copying the game and taking inspiration from a game are two totally different things..
not talking about any game in particular
if mike was here he would have said the same thing

That makes sense now... So if I make a game like Geometry dash I don't copy it's resources... I just take the idea and make it by my imagination... Ha... that makes sense...
So if my game has a different name, brand, different resources (no copies) etc... probably I wouldn't have any copyright strikes, would I?

the objective is not to avoid copyright at all,, its all about originality its about what will make your game better than geometry dash and 1000's of its duplicate out there

exactly, just keep the simple rules: Is my game designed to be for a free public gameplay? Yes = you dont need to care too much about copyrights, but you will need to get original creator allowements if you use some content which is not made by you, and (or at least) credit them. originality is a bonus No = you have to care very much about copyrights primary, you will need to contact original creators if you use some content which is not made by you and discuss /talk about money profit. you cant use licenced stuff without original author agreement. still, originality is a bonus an another words, try to make your game unique as it gets of course, but sooner or later there probably will appear somebody who will say "hey, it looks like this or that"

as to the GREAT looking Geometry Dash 3D project licence/copyrights/originality issues: well, I think the name could be "Geo 3D" or "GeoDash 3D", but if you think it all still look like the old good 2D Geometry Dash game, just replace the 3D gfx items with something less similar to the original. which will be a bit shame maybe

a perfect originality related case... compare the original movie "Kooky" vs new EAs "Unravel" game.
I think its pretty much clean which from EA has been inspired...

What's the engine? And about the first video it's kinda like toy story but originality is big.

About the second the EA developer/developers use real scene and recreates it perfectly. About the physx - I don't know. Electronic Arts (EA) are great company and if I can say they use kinda hidden or their own engine to be original. staff_emoticon

well, EA use its own engines like Ignite for sports and Frostbite for action games. but those are only examples. there is a ton of made game engines also a lot of companies seems very often did pay for Unreal engine license.
