So i decided to upgrade my dads computer seeing that christmas is around the corner..
Checked out bestbuy.ca findout they have basically have the same computer as i have still on sale ( $100 bucks cheaper ) but it only has 4G of memory and only a 250G HD where mine came with 8G of ram and 1T HD.. soo price wise it's about the same price as mine, and hardware wise both are i5's soo.
I ordered one, then find out it's an online purchase only, meaning you buy it over the internet and they ship it to you.
I really wanted it to be a local purchase here in vancouver so i could pick it up.
Turns out it's shipped from ontario ( 3 thousand miles away, the other side of canada )
9 days after ordering it showed up with UPS delivery service ( free shipping ).
hook it up, boot it up....... nope.. 4 attempts.... wont boot up, all i get is a flashing cursor in the top left corner.
So i decide to put a win10 DVD in and try to fix the bootup process, realize it was a win7 DVD ... opps...
Remove that and reboot, then the computer rebooted...
Figured i should check the BIOS settings as that could be the issue...
While there i find a DPS harddrive test utility, so i run that, yeah.. that confirmed the issue, DPS tells me the HD should be replaced... ^##**&@^@%
SOooo this was a saturday... had to wait till monday cause CDI computer systems ( the company that sells the computer under bestbuy) is closed on the weekends.
So today ( monday ) i call tech support expecting to go through a long annoying over the phone test process's to decide if its a warranty issue.
Tell them about the DPS test and it recommends replacing the HD.... to my surprise they offer 3 different repair options of my choice ( return the computer or return the HD or they will just ship out a new HD with win10 pro installed)
I take the new HD shipped to me and i'll replace it no questions asked.
So now, i expect the new HD to show up by friday... maybe monday...
So it's looking like this will be a 3 week+ process to complete the purchase and have a working computer... 3 damn weeks...
There is one good view here possibly, this computer will be my dads and he only does stupid things like play poker and download spam filled games on a regular basis...
SO i downloaded a seagate HD repair utility ( its a seagate HD ) and i'll add this drive as a second HD for him, if the repair utility fix's it, and he'll get double the HD space ( 500G ) which is way more than he currently has.
And also... his current computer is like 10+ years old and running on vista and takes like 5 minutes min to boot up.
He'll be a happy camper soon... untill he starts to install old 32bit computer games that wont run under win10 64bit.. ahh lots of fun for me coming up to find replacements that will work under win10 or maybe in DOSBOX ...
My dad knows squat about computers and the internet ..
