So i decided to go back to an old project i started a couple years ago, and maybe even finish it at some point. Download BZC_Remake_v2.036Call this a preview of the project. I'm open to suggestions, but not looking for them, if i don't reply to you, don't be offended, as said, this is just a preview and a little something to play with. It is not setup for multi-player yet, that currently is what i'm adding. The land pieces will almost certainly change, if not completely be replaced. Bugs, by all means report anything you find. I've seen only 1 issue or bug, that happens on closing, i've had a windows error box pop up saying the program didn't close properly, it only happens once in a while. So i have changed the "compatibility" mode to winxp servicepack3 and running in administrator mode, and this seems to help ( under win10 ). if all goes well, there will be 8 players, 9 if i add in a special tank for myself ( undecided ), kind of a invincible mode where i can view interactively game play or bugs etc, without you guys killing me repeatedly. All though i will be able to kill any of you ( GOD Mode, how sweet, feel it's power, sorry, day dreaming there just a bit ). I will put up a server for the project when it's ready for that, still undecided if i'll share the server project though. BattleZoneClone was intended as a remake (with a few upgrades) as a clone of BattleZone circa 1980 by Atari. www.arcade-museum.comI

Very Nice! There are a couple things I disliked.
- I know that a game about tanks kinda makes sense with tank controls, but it's not very good. Nice that you can press Right Mouse for mouse controls, but they are a bit derpy, delayed, and slides a lot.
- Do you know that when you shoot a projectile, the axis will appear sometimes when it hits?
- Not much to do. The map is very small and limited. Really the only interesting thing was shooting the spinning thing, and going up the ramp.

i'm on xp and crashes on exit too, use ProcessMonitor if you wanna fix it, but it's only a cosmetic issue/annoyance. never played the original [played BZ2 late 90's] the mouse wheel for speed and green hit flashes were a nice touch, but being able to rotate while still would be better, also needs a reset option as i got stuck twice.

These are tanks, not F1 race cars on a race track ( if that matters to you ) but i don't experience the controls the way you are suggesting. Also you say the world is small ? did you travel to the edges and encounter the barricades ?? because i think it's quite large actually, and if it were full of buildings, would be quite a nice sized city to play in. Lets not forget we're dealing with 3drad here.

indiedev oh also, the rotate while still, good idea actually, never considered it while designing, i'm not sure if the original had that feature, i suspect not.. but i'll look into it.

TinSoldier This is awesome bro! I played it and loved what I could... however when I began to shoot the spinny green thing in front of me the application quit and gave me the good old "3D Rad Player has stopped working" that we all love oh so much. That was running it @ XP SP3 as you said above. So I tried it in Windows 7 mode and it worked fine until I quit and got the same error. Third try... everything was AOkay! Not really sure what to do in it... so I just drove around. I couldn't get to the black circle thing I'm a noob Anyway, good job bro

GH Games Yeah, i don't have a clue why these quit errors happen, i'm kinda thinking it's a win10 issue. I had a similar thing happen with 2 other programs, one was OBS where the config file seemed to be reset to the default, i reported it on the OBS IRC chat, we sort of came to the conclusion that win10 is closing programs to fast maybe and if config info is being saved right before closing, that those files mite be corrupted. A lot of programs including 3drad do a file save right before closing... this maybe the issue... I'll check into things to see what i find.. The spiny green thing as you call it is intended to be a power tower for the green team. If it ever becomes part of the project , it will consist of 10 power towers per team, which the team will need to maintain and setup on the playing field, to create a power grid for your team, the idea is that all towers but the main home tower can be destroyed, forcing the team to fix the power grid, or risk being stuck with no power input and an easy target to be killed. The other rotating floating thing is called a "higgs boson" you'll have to google that to see what it refers too as i'm not explaining it, it's for you to figure out.. don't you love homework !

"The spiny green thing as you call it is intended to be a power tower for the green team." Hahahaha I was shooting this thing for about 2 minutes wondering "Why wont it die" hahaha silly me! I do love research, I also love physics

tin, it can't be a win10 issue as i had it too on xp, you may be onto something with the exit file writing though, a workaround would be to exitfade to main menu, giving writing time to complete while rad is still an open process, then exit from menu without writing stuff, or file write>timer delay [or write success validation]>then exit [disable escape] this is how any game with a save on exit feature would do it.
aside from that, i also think the indoor areas are too cramped, while outdoors is a bit too sparse, and for the 'derpiness' maybe add a mouse sensitivity if possible?

indiedev yeah, what i did instead was to change the file writting so it happens right after the data values are updated, instead of at closing time. This should help if that was involved. If file saving is the issue, i have no control over 3drad, only my file process's. I can totally add sensitivity controls, but that's more for an update or upgrade down the road.... Unless you guys really twist my arm and convince me it HAS TO BE THERE FROM THE START, or you wont like my project ... Come on guys, cramped, the map currently is circular and 3k meters across 1500x1500 meters. thats like a city of 15 blocks square ( 100mt square blocks ) generally speaking.

and PS as to an open world design,
I did look into this, butttttt
To use the easy process of "infinite terrain" in a networked project won't work properly unless each player has their own infinite terrain to move around on, this could be done.. but i decided a fixed world size was good enough for now.
If the project develops a user base who wants to use it and expect upgrades and such, then infinite or open world could be added, but it's not like i plan to add a mountainous terrain or complicated city levels.
This is intended to be a remake of a very simple tank war project from 37ish years ago.
I'm only adding "more" because it's not that hard to do and gives it a nice upgraded feel, but keeps some of the "basic" tank war feel from the original.
PS there is already a battle zone clone out there, and comparing world sizes... mine is at least 4x or more bigger than his and his is fairly advanced in design using a better engine.
I'm trying to keep it more like the original, not compete with World Of Tanks or find a happy medium either. All taking into account that 3drads lagged networking may be the death of the project before it even has a chance to even become popular.

i'm not saying the map is too small at all, just the indoor areas -make them wider so as not to bump into walls all the time, and for outdoors, 'sparse' means not many objects and lots of open space, just add a few crates etc to hide behind is all, open world/infinite terrain would be overkill.
---------- edit: i also think BZ2 had strafe, since they are hover tanks it should be plausible

UPDATE:
I've added rotating while siting still, and added a mouse sensitivity option too.( still playing with the scripts )
Strafe will not be added as these tanks mite look like hover tanks, but are not designed to be.
I will also be adding an update check option, so by clicking a button you can see if a newer version is available for download. The download will be a replacement process ( install over top of the current install, or delete re-install, your choice ), Using some sort of patch update is more than i'm prepared to add to the project.
Also the download wont happen inside the project, as you'll still need to exit and install the new version, i may add a browser link on exit to the download, so you wont have to even open your browser, your defined default browser will open to the download for you.

if it's an online game all players will need same version right? so the update should be a forced notification rather than a user check.

I see what your saying, it could be builtin where the project checks the current version with the server version and forces a update to the current version.
That does sound better then a user option to check.
I was trying to avoid a "calling home" process because i personally hate that in programs.

This project isn't dead, but is on the back burner.. I really hate this, but i often loose interest with the project i'm working on, or just get an idea for something else and work on that... till i loose interest. I never delete any of my projects ( current 3drad folder size is 8.5G ).
